Marketplace/ACA Plans
Here is where you will find plans from carriers like BCBS, Oscar, Cigna, and others. Most are HMO/EPO type plans where you must stay in the networks.
For ACA plans, typically anyone can enroll during “Open Enrollment” which runs Nov 1–Dec 15, and outside of those dates, people need a qualifying “life change” to enroll (such as a birth, marriage, moving cities, etc).
Due to the exceptional circumstances of Covid-19, most states are now allowing anyone* to enroll without a qualifying life change from Feb 15th through August 15th also – they’re calling this a “Covid Special Enrollment Period.”
Term Plans
Short Term Medical (STM): Don’t be fooled by the word “short” in this title as short-term medical plans will go as long as 12 months in most states. These plans are extremely flexible, and you can use them very short term (1 month) or as long-term coverage as well. They are great if you are looking fill in the gap between jobs, Medicare, sudden loss of coverage, etc. These plans can start as soon as the next day and have great PPO networks!
Fixed Benefit Plans
Indemnity plans were introduced in 1980 as an affordable way to receive good medical coverage at a decent price. They were once purposed as a supplement to traditional healthcare policies.
